All talk, no action

Several years ago when I was living in Boston I would take the T out to Sullivan Square and then catch the bus to my job. One morning, the bus driver accidentally took a wrong turn out of the T station. It was 6:45am and, as usual, I had my headphones on and was half asleep. Most other people on the bus were similarly distracted; either sleeping, reading, wearing headphones, etc. In my sleepy haze I just figured we were taking a detour. It didn't occur to me that the driver didn't know where he was going. After a few blocks he realized his mistake, apologized to the riders, and went around the block to turn around. Immediately afterwards a woman stood up and started screaming (it may have just been yelling but at 6:45am almost everything sounds like screaming) that we were all "sheep" for not saying anything. For not pointing out the driver's mistake. She continued her rant that we "all rode this damn thing every day" and knew "damn well where this bus goes to." Sheep, sheep, sheep. She went on for quite a few minutes until the bus driver asked her, way too politely in my opinion, to sit down and stop yelling before he had to ask her to leave. She sat down but continued to mumble under her breath.

Of course, she was right to a certain extent. I'm sure there were people who thought about saying something to the driver and didn't. But all I kept thinking while she was spewing all over the bus was, "Well, why didn't YOU say anything?"

I was reminded of this story last Saturday when I attended the anti-racism rally in Lent's Park. Sidebar for those who didn't hear - the Hammerskins had their annual Hammerfest event in Portland this month. The rally was in response to this group's arrival, the Hammerskins being one of the largest national groups of skinheads, and letting them know they were not welcome here. I drove out there with a couple of folks and was totally shocked to see the park barely 1/4 full. Considering there were SO many posts and re-posts about the event on Myspace, I thought we would see at least a handful, if not more, of folks we knew. However, we only ended up seeing one of J's friends as we were leaving the rally.

One.

Maybe there were more folks and we just missed each other. I hope that's the case! But seriousy, queer community, what gives? Are you just a bunch of lip service? Do you only believe in putting energy into queer rights/events? I'm not preaching from some pulpit - I certainly don't go to tons of political rallies - but for how many folks I see bemoaning the lack of political umph in the queer community, I just keep thinking, "Well, why don't YOU say anything?"

Just sayin'.

*vroom*

I passed my motorcycle skills test on Saturday meaning I just have to pay the DMV and I'll have my motorcycle license. Getting my motorcycle endorsement has been a goal of mine for YEARS. Seriously, in Boston I looked up the classes for Bunker Hill Community College every single year but never took the plunge. I'm glad I can now put a checkmark by one of my major life goals. Sweet.

Of course my grand plans for getting a scooter in time for the school year were thwarted when my scooter of choice decided to not come in until mid-October. Originally, it was supposed to come in back in August. Then it got pushed to September. And now October. I figured it was silly to buy a scooter in the late Fall, especially being a new rider and all, right before the rainy season hits. So I bought a little Geo Metro hatchback to carry me over. I'm still hoping to get a scooter in the spring/summer of next year.

Hello, I'm 30. I just bought my first car (ever), finally got my motorcycle license, started graduate school, and just celebrated a one-year anniversary with my girlfriend. It's turning out to be a pretty damn eventful year. Awesome.

Time to Get Schooled

After years of hemming 'n hawing, hawing 'n hemming, coming up with every excuse imaginable why I couldn't do it, why I couldn't afford it, why I couldn't justify the expense, why the timing wasn't right, why I wasn't sure it was what I really wanted to do...I'm finally going to grad school this fall! Yup, for reals. Last Thursday I got accepted to Lewis & Clark's MA in Counseling Psych program with a specialization in Addictions Treatment. I'm still waiting to hear back about the app I put in for Portland State's MSW program but I've already decided on Lewis & Clark. An acceptance to PSU would just be the icing on the cake since then I could brag that I had a 100% acceptance rate for my grad school apps ;)

Lewis & Clark is spendy, I'm well aware, but I'm busting my butt applying for scholarships and hopefully this will reap some minor financial rewards. $500 here, $1,000 there...it all adds up. Plus I still have a good chunk of my Americorps education award to use.

Life is good, life is grand. The weather is beautiful, it's closing in on seven months with my awesome girlfriend, I had a super fun trip to Seattle last weekend, I'll be 30 before I know it (three months away! eek!), my newish band - Slim & The Competitive Eater - is playing our first show ever on April 18th with Bitch and Swan Island, and I'm insanely excited to be starting school again in the fall.

Tell me about awesome things in your life. I want to hear 'em. Really.

I got my septum pierced today. Finally. I've been thinking about it forever and finally just did it. Tracy at Optic Nerve is so incredibly rad. And there's nothing quite like walking down Alberta in the rain with watering eyes, snot & antiseptic pouring from my nose, and a pissed off septum. I got it done with a 12g retainer which is now shoved up my nose for two weeks.

Yay. Now I just need all those tattoos I've been wanting forever.

Choose Your Own Theme New Year's Party!

Holy crap, it's that time of year again. It seems like just yesterday we were ringing in 2005 dressed like extras from Ferris Buellar's Day Off. This year there was much debate about a theme and I'm afraid we're at a standstill. So this year it's a Choose Your Own Theme New Year's Party at the Fancy House!

That's right...come dressed as whatever you damn well please. While humorous dress, random costumes and fancy hats are always encouraged, we just want you to show up and have a good time. There will be limited drinks provided (re: lots of free PBR) but bring the fancy stuff if that's what you prefer. Festivities start at party o' clock and end whenever you want them to. Music, dancing, Twister, karaoke and lots of hot queers. What could be better?

Details....

Choose Your Own Theme New Year's Party
@ The Fancy House
5203 NE 24th Ave. (corner of NE 24th & Sumner)
Party o' clock

Call/e-mail with any questions, comments, ideas, concerns, or offers for sexual favors.

xoxo Cort
971-222-9777
courtm@gmail.com

As for the location, well, I'm not exactly sure. I think it's around NE 14th & Sumner, right where that weird cul-de-sac is located. You know the one. If you still have no idea, call me or e-mail me (971.222.9777 or pdxdrums@yahoo.com) and I'll find out the actual address.

Ya know, party 'o clock.
One little compliment can make you feel amazing. So give me a compliment, anything in the entire world, even that my shoelaces are pretty. Put this in your journal. And once you get some comments, put that entry in a memory or tag and when you are feeling down, just go to that entry and this will remind how great you are.

Ideas?

Ok, this is public cause I'm looking for ideas. I have two things I need ideas/advice/suggestions on and I am hoping you all can help!

1.) Our friend David, who own Scary Monster Music, is going to ask the Music Liberation Project to write a feature story on t-reXXXa. He's pretty sure they will do it but when he asks them he wants to give them a top 10 list of reasons why they should write about us. And, of course, I'm blank on ideas. I mean...I think they SHOULD write about us, but, uh, well, I have no idea why outside of "We're good and stuff". Know what I mean? I know a lot of you have seen us so any ideas?

2.) Our cat box is STINKY. My housemate and I clean it every single day but it is still smelly. We have one full grown cat and two 8-month-old kittens that use it. We're currently using Arm & Hammer litter and I'm wondering if there might be a better, more odor-controlling litter out there. Anyone have any suggestion of brands to try? I get paid tomorrow and I want to pick up some litter along with a good air freshener.

Thank ya.

Project Clean Slate

Do you work in social services, have some minor legal problems of your own or perhaps know someone who does? This just came through my office and I think it’s pretty cool. There is this new organization called Project Clean Slate and, murders and rapists aside, it is open to most every Multnomah county resident of any ethic group, gender or age. Project Clean Slate can assist you with getting those legal monkeys off your back. Perhaps you’re looking to expunge a juvenile criminal record, or need to get a suspension fee reduced so you can renew your driver’s license or maybe you have warrants out for your arrest that are making you anxious. Outstanding speeding tickets? Jaywalking tickets? Here’s your chance to get it taken care of!

The goal of Project Clean Slate is to clean up the legal morass that’s preventing otherwise law-abiding folks from getting a job or qualifying for public assistance. The July 9th event will take place from 10:00am to 5:00pm at Portland Community College’s Cascade campus just off of North Killingsworth. About 500 people are expected to show up so be prepared to wait. Safeway has agreed to provide box lunches to those who attend and the Albina Ministerial Alliance is offering free childcare. Other social service agencies will also be on-hand to help you find housing, clear up your credit or teach you how to be a better parent.

Everyone interested in attending is required to fill out an application in advance so the public defender’s office can fully research your legal problems. You can pick up and drop off an application at Oregon Action, 6601 NE Martin Luther King Blvd., 503-282-6588. **This is NOT a scam to draw criminals out of hiding to arrest them** In fact, that day, police have agreed to consider the area around the college campus a No Arrest Zone. The police have also agreed to reduce the number of patrols in the area so cops won’t be tempted to stop someone they recognize. And the media will NOT be allowed to videotape or take any pictures.
